My Partner Always Makes Our Kids & Pets a Priority Over Me!
Relationships are all about compromise and putting your partner first. Of course, your kids and pets need you but then so does your partner. Putting them way down the ladder on the priority list is never a good thing in a relationship!
Are you trying to push them away? Do you want them to feel lonely in their own home?
Men write to my advice column that they feel replaced by the kids or pets (especially in the bedroom) and women have written to me saying that they feel very alone due to their partner’s other activities/sports/video games that don’t include them.
Some people think that when you are in a committed relationship that you don’t have to try so hard anymore. That is the opposite of what should be happening!
Divorce is at an all-time high right now because men and women don’t have to stay where they aren’t happy. We have so many more options than our grandparents ever did and now we don’t have to remain in unhealthy or loveless environments.
I personally believe that kids and pets should not get in the habit of climbing into bed with you. That is a sacred place for you and your partner. It is an intimate space that you share together as a couple.
If you want to keep the romance alive in your bedroom keep the baby barf and pet hair out of it.
Relationships need to be nurtured and they need to be balanced. It is very important to keep the teeter-totter level in all aspects of your partnership! You fell in love for a reason and you need to hold onto that and not become complacent or think that nothing will ever change.
Relationships take work and no one said it would be smooth sailing. With a little compromise, affection and a lot of prioritizing, it can be a very loving place to come home to. When you show continual respect for each other on a daily basis it takes on a natural flow that continues for years to come.
